The Rangers made a positive start in their first competitive match with a 2-1 victory over Brechin in the Ramsdens Cup, although they required extra-time in front of a full house at Glebe Park.

It took the Third Division new boys just four minutes to open the scoring when new signing Andy Little got between two defenders and slotted the ball under the advancing Michael Andrews.

Andy Jackson made great strides down the hedge-side of the ground and cut the ball inside to Craig Molloy, whose low drive was held by Neil Alexander as the hosts tried to hit back quickly.

Little's penalty appeals were then waved away by referee George Salmond, who instead awarded a corner to Rangers.

Jackson (43) took advantage of sloppy defending involving Kirk Broadfoot and Doran Goian before sliding the ball between Alexander and his near post to level for City.

Ian Black - another new Rangers arrival - forced Andrews into a save from a free-kick and the Brechin keeper later clutched a flick from Barry McKay.

Lee McCulloch settled the tie in favour of Ally McCoist's men when he bundled the ball in from close range at a corner 12 minutes into extra-time.
