Last-place Queens Park Rangers boosted its hopes of surviving relegation from the Premier League by beating Southampton 2-1 on Saturday, giving manager Harry Redknapp the perfect 66th birthday present.

Jay Bothroyd, recently returned from a spell on loan at second-tier Sheffield Wednesday, scored the winning goal in the 77th minute to secure only QPR's second away victory of the campaign.

The London club closed the gap to next-to-last Reading to three points with 10 matches remaining and is now within touching distance of escaping the bottom three.

Loic Remy put QPR ahead in the 14th only for Gaston Ramirez to equalize on the stroke of halftime for Southampton, which stays fifth from bottom.
