Puerto Rico Islanders shock L.A. Galaxy
Nicolas Addlery scored twice to lead the Puerto Rico Islanders to a surprise 4-1 win at the Los Angeles Galaxy in the preliminary round of the CONCACAF Champions' League on Tuesday.
David Foley and Josh Hansen also scored for the Islanders, which play in the second tier of professional North American football but proved far too good for a Los Angeles team that is top of the Major League Soccer standings.
The second leg will be played Aug. 4 in San Juan, with the overall winner to progress to the group stage.
English striker Foley gave Puerto Rico a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. Galaxy defender A.J. DeLaGarza blocked a goal-bound header on the line but Foley was on hand to knock it into the net.
Jamaican forward Addlery made it 2-0 in the 45th minute with a shot that Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders got a hand to but couldn't stop.
Hansen - a former Galaxy reserves player - scored a 29-yard drive in the 56th minute to make it 3-0, and Addlery scored his second goal in the 81st minute on a 19-yard line drive for 4-0.
Islanders defender Richard Martinez deflected Edson Buddle's shot into his own net in the 83rd minute for L.A.'s only goal.
