PSV look to go clear in Holland
Fred Rutten's side moved to the top of the pile from FC Twente on goal difference on Tuesday courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Roda JC at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion. PSV had goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson to thank as they rode their luck to hold on for three points following Danny Koevermans' scrappy goal in first-half stoppage time. Rutten returned to Eindhoven from Kerkrade a happy man and soon turned his focus to the next challenge. He said: "Roda JC produced a commanding first-half performance. "The three points are in the bag and I think we deserved to win as we created most chances. "We go home feeling good and will turn our attention to Friday's Eredivisie game against NEC." Steve McClaren's second-placed Twente will be on hand to take advantage of any slip-up on Sunday when they visit FC Groningen. Also on Sunday, champions AZ Alkmaar travel to the Amsterdam ArenA to take on Martin Jol's Ajax, who head into the weekend in third spot. Home goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is expecting an exciting encounter. "I think it's always fun," the Holland international said on www.ajax.nl. "It will definitely not be boring." Fourth-placed Feyenoord visit mid-table VVV Venlo in what will be both teams' first league match of 2010. Mario Been will be without Dani Fernandez and Kelvin Leerdam through injuries for the trip but otherwise has a full squad at his disposal. Goalkeeper Rob van Dijk told club website www.feyenoord.nl: "We are strong. We have a good training camp behind us, with a fine victory over Kayserispor. "But for us we know that the results must be achieved on the field." The Rotterdammers edged the first meeting between the sides this term in October but Van Dijk does not expect his side to have it all their own way this weekend. The 41-year-old added: "At home we won with 1-0, but they had opportunities to level the score in the closing stages. I do not expect this game will be a walkover for us." Also on Sunday, second-bottom ADO Den Haag will be looking for only their fourth win of the season when they travel to Sparta Rotterdam. Heerenveen head into the weekend in 14th spot - only three points clear of ADO - but defender Daryl Janmaat is convinced his team have too much ability to end up in the relegation play-off. "We will not be in the play-offs," the 20-year-old told www.sc-heerenveen.nl. "We have too much quality for that. With this squad, we can easily secure a place in the top eight." Saturday's visitors Willem II currently occupy one of the play-off places but would move level on points with Heerenveen if they win this weekend. Also on Saturday, fifth-placed Heracles Almelo take on Vitesse Arnhem, sixth-spotted FC Utrecht visit Roda and basement boys RKC Waalwijk host Europa League contenders NAC Breda.
