The Premier Division is off to a hot start. Let’s take a look at how each club has fared thus far.
Dundalk:
I’ll start off with the leaders and most important team in the league, Dundalk. They sit on 55 points, 7 points clear of second place Cork City. Dundalk were on cup duty last and beat Belfield Bowl by a goal to nil. There last Premier Division game was against Sligo Rovers who they beat 1-0 at the Showgrounds. Lilywhite hero David McMillan got the only goal.
Cork City:
Cork City stand in second place on 48 point and have been Dundalk’s main rival in recent times. They were involved in cup duty and got a comfortable win over Shamrock Rovers. Bray Wanderers were the last they played in the league and got a convincing 4-0 win at Turners Cross. Goals came from Gearoid Morrissey, Gavan Holohan, Kenny Browne and Sean Maguire.
Derry City:
Derry City sit third in the league standings. Unfortunately they were involved in a boring 0-0. Ground has been lost on the leaders but they could maybe make on last title push.
Shamrock Rovers:
Shamrock Rovers were the leagues greatest team but unfortunately lost ground to teams like Cork and Derry. They are on the way back up and are only 2 points off third. A 1-0 victory over Galway saw Rovers go 2 points behind Cork. Gary Shaw scored the opener just before half time, which saw what was a boring game start to open up.
St Patrick’s Athletic F.C.:
Pats have struggled for some time now but they just don’t stop. Another loss has been added to the table with a 1-2 loss coming at home against Bray. Pats went ahead but a Hugh Douglas goal saw Bray come from behind to win.
Bohemians:
Bohemians again were a top team in Irish football but due to financial issues they have dropped down the table. A defeat to the league leaders 2-1 sees them sit seventh on 32 points.
Galway United:
As mentioned before United lost 1-0 at home to Shamrock Rovers. That result sees them sit in eighth place, a point behind seventh.
Bray Wanderers:
Bray had a better weekend with a 2-0 away win against Longford Town. Ger Pender scores just before the break and Darragh Noone scores just before the final whistle. Bray sit in ninth on 30 points.
Finn Harps:
There last league game was a 2-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers at home. Harps are on their own in tenth place, with no challenge from behind and challenging nobody.

Wexford Youths:
A run of poor form from Youths saw them gain another defeat against Derry City. A 3-1 loss sees them remain in eleventh place and are battling relegation with Longford Town.
Longford Town:
Longford are living up to being favorites for relegation. The club are twelfth sitting on 10 points. The played Bray last and once again lost 2-0 at home. It does look like they will go down unless they can go unbeaten in their remaining fixtures and others go their way.
Round-up:
The league is stretched out in places. Longford will certainly go down and I have no doubt Dundalk will lift the title again.
