Police have arrested seven football fans following the violence at the end of Birmingham's League Cup quarterfinal win over Aston Villa and are trying to identify more troublemakers.

Birmingham fans ran onto the St. Andrews field after Wednesday's game to goad rival supporters and throw a flare at them. Villa supporters responded by hurling it back, ripping up seats and throwing them onto the pitch.

West Midlands Police Superintendent Steve Graham lauded the passion of English fans but said Thursday that "it is just a shame it spilled over into the criminal behavior we saw on the pitch at the end."

Wednesday's violence was reminiscent of that which marred English football through the 1970s and '80s.
