Premier League clubs have decided against further discussing the
possibility of giving England's fourth Champions League spot to the
winner of end-of-season playoffs.
The top four clubs currently qualify automatically for
Europe's leading club competition but teams were consulted over the
idea of reducing that to three and holding playoffs involving the
sides finishing fourth through seventh.
The Netherlands abandoned a playoff system for its second
Champions League place in 2008 after three seasons and England does
not now look set to follow the experiment.
Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore says "there
was not enough support to take the idea forward."
