Parma lifted by Palermo victory
Parma further boosted their Serie A survival hopes and heaped yet more home misery on Palermo with a 2-1 victory at La Favorita Wednesday afternoon.
After falling behind to an early Abel Hernandez strike, Parma secured their third straight win thanks to second-half efforts by Stefano Okaka and Jonathan Biabiany.
The three points lifted the visitors into ninth place, nine points clear of danger and now almost certainly assured of safety with just four games remaining.
The same cannot be said of slumping Palermo, who remain without a win at home since February 19 and are now nursing a run of just one win in 10 matches that leaves them six points above the drop zone.
The home side nevertheless started positively and forced visiting goalkeeper Antonio Mirante into a good save from Hernandez's low shot after just two minutes.
With just six minutes on the clock the hosts took the lead when Andrea Mantovani's cushioned header fell to Hernandez, who nodded home from close range.
Palermo continued to dominate after opening the scoring and Hernandez again went close on 13 minutes but as before Mirante was up to the task.
The Parma goalkeeper was called on twice more before the half was out, saving from Franco Vasquez and then Igor Budan as the visitors did well to limit the damage at the break.
Matias Silvestre almost fluked a second for the home side on 48 minutes when his corner struck the crossbar, but after that Parma finally came to life.
Sebastian Giovinco was the first to threaten on 54 minutes, his low effort forcing Emiliano Viviano into action for the first time in the match.
The equaliser arrived two minutes later, Okaka finding himself in the right place to head home almost on the goal-line from Giovinco's cross.
The same combination almost added a second on 66 minutes but this time Okaka headed over, but Parma's winner did arrive with 20 minutes remaining, Giovinco again the provider for Biabiany whose effort nestled in the top-right corner.
Palermo rallied late on in search of a point but chances for Hernandez and Edgar Barreto inside the final 10 minutes came to nothing as Mirante again stood firm.
