Palmeiras defeats Goias 1-0 in Copa Sudamericana

Marcos Assuncao's goal early in the second half lifted Palmeiras to a 1-0 victory at fellow Brazilian club Goias in Wednesday's first-leg semifinal of the Copa Sudamericana.

The victory gives Palmeiras an edge in reaching the final, as it will host the second leg at its Pacaembu stadium in Sao Paulo.

The Copa Sudamericana is South America's No. 2 club competition, behind the more famous Copa Libertadores.
