Martin Palermo, who retired last year as the top scorer in the history of Boca Juniors, has been named coach at Argentine first-division club Godoy Cruz.

Palermo played with several Argentine clubs and also played with three Spanish clubs - Villarreal, Real Betis and Alaves. He has 15 caps with Argentina's national team and played in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He replaces Omar Asad, who resigned over the weekend with his club struggling near the bottom of the first division. Godoy has only 19 points, 16 fewer than league leader Velez Sarsfield.
