Bayer Leverkusen says Colombia Under-20 midfielder Michael Ortega needs surgery after injuring his left knee in his first training session with the German club.

Leverkusen said in a statement Wednesday that Ortega tore a meniscus in his left knee on Monday and will be out of action ''for the coming weeks.''

Ortega was signed on a one-year loan deal from Atlas Guadalajara in Mexico last month, when Bayer managing director Wolfgang Holzhaeuser described him as a ''sensation'' at the Under-20 World Cup.

Leverkusen said Ortega would remain in Germany to complete his recovery.
