Oleh Blokhin to coach Ukraine national team again

BY foxsports • April 21, 2011

Former European player of the year Oleh Blokhin was appointed coach of Ukraine for the second time on Thursday.

Ukraine's football federation announced that Blokhin, who won the 1975 Ballon d'Or, will replace interim coach Yuri Kalitvintsev.

''I perfectly realize the amount of responsibility I am supposed to bear, particularly considering that it's Ukraine that will host Euro 2012,'' Blokhin said of Poland's co-host for the 2012 European Championship.

Blokhin coached Ukraine to the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup but left after the team failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championship.

He was one of the world's most prolific strikers in the 1970s, scoring 211 goals for Dynamo Kiev and 42 for the Soviet Union.

Blokhin has also coached Olympiakos, AEK Athens and PAOK among other clubs.
