Mohammed Abdellaoue converted a penalty in the 88th minute to give Norway a 1-0 win over Iceland in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Friday.

The Icelanders were on track to hold their Nordic rivals to a draw in the Group H game until goalkeeper Stefan Magnusson brought down Norway striker John Carew in the area.

Abdealloue made no mistake, sending his spot-kick into Magnusson's right corner.

Iceland started out on the attack at Oslo's Ullevaal stadium, with Rurik Gislason's shot testing Norway goalkeeper Rune Almenning Jarstein in the third minute.

But the home team gradually took control of the match, with Kjetil Waehler and Alexander Tettey creating chances before the halftime whistle.

Norway was stronger after the break, and had a goal disallowed when Brede Hangeland was ruled offside, while Tettey hit the post in the 68th.

The win keeps the Norwegians in contention for qualifying, ahead of their clash with Denmark on Tuesday. They are currently level on 13 points with group leader Portugal after six games in the five-team group.
