Nigeria's national football team has fired coach Shaibu Amodu with only months to go before the World Cup, after the team's disappointing showing at the African Cup of Nations.

The Nigerian Football Federation said on its Web site Saturday that it would immediately begin a search for a new coach. The federation said its short list includes Guus Hiddink, Ratomir Dujkovic, Louis van Gaal and Peter Taylor.

Nigeria finished third in last month's African Cup of Nations, but Amodu was roundly criticized across the country for the team's lackluster play.
