Hatem Ben Arfa made his first appearance since his horror leg break at Manchester City last October as Newcastle won at Darlington. Boss Alan Pardew named a strong line-up and captain Joey Barton, who will miss the pre-season tour of North America after being denied a visa, opened the scoring in the third minute when he knocked home a cross from Leon Best. Substitute Sammy Ameobi drilled home a fine second goal 10 minutes into the second half at The Darlington Arena, prompting a pitch invasion from the visiting fans which held up play for 10 minutes. Everton coasted to a 4-1 win over League One new boys Bury at Gigg Lane. Ayegbeni Yakubu, Leon Osman and a Magaye Gueye brace put the game out of sight before half-time. Marouane Fellaini returned to the starting line-up after an ankle injury. Queen's Park Rangers edged a 1-0 friendly win at Harrow Borough with trialist striker Pa Saikou Kujabi breaking the deadlock with a 25-yard free-kick early in the second half.
