Mphela gives South Africa a 1-0 win over Ghana

In its first match since hosting the World Cup, South Africa defeated Ghana 1-0 at Soccer City on Wednesday night as Katlego Mphela scored in the 42nd minute.

Mphela ran onto a Steven Pienaar's pass behind the defense and beat goalkeeper Richard Kingson.

South Africa became the first World Cup host to fail to advance past the first round.

Ghana beat the United States 2-1 in overtime in the second round before losing to Uruguay in the quarterfinals on penalty kicks - Asamoah Gyan missed a late penalty kick following Luis Suarez's hand ball at the goal line.
