Real Madrid have called a press conference for this evening as speculation intensifies about the future of coach Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho has been heavily linked with a return to Chelsea this summer and directors at the Spanish club are thought to have discussed his departure at a meeting today.

Madrid have not given any details regarding the subject of the press conference which will be held by president Florentino Perez, but they could confirm Mourinho's exit, paving the way for his return to Stamford Bridge.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti is in line to replace him, but Real bosses must first decide whether Mourinho takes charge of the final two games of the season or leaves before Saturday's visit to Real Sociedad.

Interim Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has long intimated that Mourinho would be back at Stamford Bridge next season and dropped another hint during his final Cobham press conference on Friday.

Asked if he had any advice for his successor, Benitez said: "Maybe the next manager will have some experience here too, so I do not need to give him any advice."

Club president Nasser Al Khelaifi said: "Yes, we had discussions, he asked to depart for Real Madrid.

"I said it is not possible because he has a contract for one year more, so that is our decision. It is his problem, it is not our problem. We have offered him another year more on his contract as well as the one he has. When you have a contract, everyone is normally obliged to honor that."

Ancelotti admitted his interest in the Real job at the Ligue 1 awards evening.

He said: "Real is a possibility but I have a year left on my contract. It is the club who will decide. We have to decide together. My decision is to leave the club. It is not easy because I have had a very good relationship with everyone. It is not the time to explain the reason why I wish to leave the club, and perhaps I will never explain it."
