Morton surprise as first half of Scottish League Cup quarterfinals complete
While we all wait with anticipation for Celtic’s matchup with Alloa Athletic in the Scottish League Cup quarterfinals, two of the other three games were completed on Tuesday. Perhaps the name most surprising to hear as winners was Greenock Morton, who dispatched fellow Scottish Championship side Dundee United 2-1.
It was an interesting clash, as Dundee United fielded a number of different players from last weekend. Meanwhile, little ole Morton fielded a starting XI with just one change thanks to a squad depleted by no more than a half-dozen injured players at the moment.
Still, it was the host side Morton opening the scoring as Jai Quitongo put one just under the bar in the 24th minute of action.
It didn’t take long for Morton to make it a 2-0 lead, as Thomas O’Ware nailed a beautiful header off of a corner kick in the 31st minute.
The opening goal scorer was about the only highlight to a rather dull match thanks to some blustery conditions in Greenock. Quintongo was able to connect on many long balls played by the hosts and could’ve easily had a hattrick with a few more lucky moments in the second half.

However, it was Dundee United that would find the back of the net in the second half. Nick van der Velden made it a one-goal game with a nice strike of his own on 55 minutes. It just wasn’t enough to get the visitors the chance they needed to really win the contest.
Overall, it may be advantageous for Celtic to look at a matchup with Greenock Morton as a win should the Hoops advance on Wednesday.
Speaking of advancing — it may mean an extra matchup with Sevco, as the club easily tossed aside Championship squad Queen of the South 5-0 to earn its spot in the semi-finals. It was a Martyn Waghorn second-half hattrick (63′, 71′, 83′) that sealed the deal for Sevco.
All that is left to know is who will win between Celtic and Alloa as well as the biggest matchup of the quarterfinals — Aberdeen against St. Johnstone. After all, it is an intriguing matchup of sides currently sitting third (St. Johnstone on 10 points) and fourth (Aberdeen on nine points) in the SPFL table.
Should Aberdeen take the win it certainly sets up an interesting semi-final as the three most well-know clubs in the country could be in the mix for a cup final appearance. It could also mean a difficult road to a domestic treble for the Bhoys, something they really don’t need given their already difficult travels in Europe as well.
