Montpellier level at top after Caen win

Montpellier beat Caen 3-1 Saturday to go level on points with leader Paris Saint-Germain in the French league, while Marseille defeated Ajaccio 2-0 to move away from the relegation zone.
Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa opened the scoring in the 14th minute by nodding in a free kick from Younes Belhanda. Nigerian striker John Utaka doubled the lead on a counterattack with a powerful strike in the 20th before Belhanda made it 3-0 in the 79th.
Caen midfielder Benjamin Nivet pulled one back by converting a penalty in the 82nd.
Also Saturday, it was: Saint-Etienne 1, Valenciennes 0; Sochaux 1, Evian 1; Nancy 1, Nice 0; Bordeaux 1, Brest 1.
