MONACO (AP) French league club Monaco appointed Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim on a two-year deal to replace Claudio Ranieri.

Monaco announced the news on its website Friday. Jardim led Sporting to a runner-up finish in the Portuguese league this season.

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev says Jardim ''is part of this new generation of coaches who bring a new dynamic. He's ambitious as we are. He fits exactly the profile we were looking for.''

Ranieri helped Monaco gain promotion last year and finish second in the French league this season. But the club dismissed the Italian coach because of a season with no silverware.
