Mokoena retains 'belief' in Pompey
Pompey are five points adrift at the foot of the table but can move within touching distance of safety by beating fifth-bottom West Ham on Tuesday. Manager Avram Grant has been unable to boost his squad in the January window because the club is still under a transfer embargo, which he hopes will be lifted before the weekend. But regardless, South African midfielder Mokoena believes the team already have enough quality to drag Pompey out of the drop zone. "I still have a 110 per cent belief that we can get out of trouble," he said in the Daily Mail. "It's going to be very difficult and we have a mountain to climb. But we still have good players and if we give our best then our belief will hold us in good stead. "My belief has never wavered. Our strength is as a team and we are prepared to face the challenges ahead. "It's important for us to give the supporters something to believe in, but the fans, players and management staff all want the same thing. "We're in this together and we'll get out of it together." West Ham's own financial problems have been eased by the takeover of David Gold and David Sullivan. The Hammers earned a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Pompey at Upton Park on Boxing Day and a repeat victory would put them three points clear of the bottom three. "I would imagine the takeover at West Ham has given them a boost, so they are going to come down here and make it difficult for us," Mokoena added. "We have a great respect for West Ham but we need three points as well. "It is still tight down there at the bottom. We have been written off time and again this season but if we beat West Ham we will be only two points from safety."
