McClaren wants focus from Twente
Steve McClaren wants his FC Twente side to move on from the KNVB Beker semi-final defeat by taking another step towards the Eredivisie title.
Twente, who went down 2-1 at Feyenoord on Thursday night, host struggling Sparta Rotterdam on Saturday and victory could take them seven points clear at the top of the table, for 24 hours at least, with closest challengers Ajax and PSV Eindhoven not in action until Sunday.
Both of those teams appear to also have tougher assignments, with the Amsterdammers at home to eighth-placed FC Groningen and PSV away to a VVV Venlo side who have lost just twice at home in the league all season.
Last Saturday's 1-1 draw in Eindhoven kept Twente firmly in control of the title race and also allowed Ajax to move a point above PSV into second.
And McClaren, who left key duo Blaise N'Kufo and Kenneth Perez out of the starting XI for the Feyenoord match, wants his side to heap more pressure on the chasing pack.
"In the league we have six finals," the former England boss told the club's official website.
"On Thursday we have to focus again on the league. With have an important game with Sparta on Saturday. I expect a good response from the players in that game."
Defending champions AZ Alkmaar will look to stay hot on Feyenoord's heels in the race for fourth and Europa League qualification with victory at home to Heracles Almelo on Saturday.
AZ, who have played a game more than Feyenoord, go into the weekend three points behind the Rotterdammers but will have their work cut out against a Heracles side just two points further back in sixth.
Feyenoord travel to NEC Nijmegen on Sunday.
Elsewhere, NAC Breda are at home to relegation-threatened ADO Den Haag on Friday night. Second-bottom Willem II travel to third-bottom Vitesse Arnhem on Saturday and a win for either could take them out of the bottom three provided ADO do not win. Also on Saturday, Roda JC welcome Heerenveen, while FC Utrecht host all-but-relegated RKC Waalwijk on Sunday.
