McCarthy playing down derby
While Wolves boss Mick McCarthy would love to get one over West Brom this weekend, he is playing down the significance of the game.
The Molineux outfit boosted their standing in the Midlands last weekend with a 1-0 win over Birmingham, but next in line are the Baggies.
Wolves have a woeful record at The Hawthorns of late, having failed to beat their rivals away from home since their 1996 triumph.
McCarthy is playing down the necessity to win at West Brom, stating every game on the club's fixture list remains a huge encounter.
However, the Yorkshireman knows the significance of the game to fans and would love to stay up while succeeding in the Black Country derby.
"It hasn't got any bearing on it really. It's about this year," McCarthy told the Birmingham Mail with regard to his side's poor record against West Brom.
"It's like all the other Birmingham ones had no bearing on what happened on Sunday. All the games that have gone on in the past have no bearing.
"I know it's a huge game, don't get me wrong, but whoever we are playing it would be a huge game.
"But I also understand the importance of it locally. Don't anyone think I underestimate that.
"But I don't go down the road of 'if you win the two against West Brom it doesn't matter what else happens'.
"No. You want to get 50 points and stay up and have a great season. If we beat West Brom in the process then fantastic."
McCarthy is also happy fighting his corner and while some managers avoid confrontation, he will give as good as he gets.
He gets some abuse from fans of Midlands rivals, but rather than ducking and shying away will issue a stern response.
"I have enough mates round the town that let me know the ill-feeling towards the Baggies, and I've met enough Baggies fans to know the ill-feeling towards me - until I confronted him," he continued.
"He should have kept his mouth shut when he was five foot nowt and calling me names out the car window. I don't think he expected my response. You just get it.
"It will be the same this weekend from the Baggies but I have to say, in the main, I don't get that much. It's the odd numpty."
