Mata expects Spanish goal fest

Valencia winger Juan Mata believes the all-Spanish Europa League quarter-final tie against Atletico Madrid will be a goal fest.

League form would make Valencia favourites for a tie they begin on home soil, but this is likely to mean much more to Atletico as Los Che focus their efforts on securing Champions League football for next season.

Valencia are third in the standings, with a six-point cushion above Real Mallorca and fourth position, which would require them to go through the qualifiers.

Atletico, in contrast, have had a poor season in the league and must win either Copa del Rey - of which they have reached the final - or the Europa League to ensure continental football next term.

Valencia go into the game on the back of a 3-0 league defeat by Real Zaragoza, but Mata is expecting them to bounce back and is predicting a tie with plenty of goals at both ends, similar to their win over Werder Bremen in the last round, which finished in a 5-5 tie before they advanced on away goals.

"It will be a game with a lot of goals, similar to the match against Werder Bremen," said Mata on the club's website.

"They are two teams with similar characteristics, and there is the potential for a heavy scoreline over the two legs."

Mata admitted Atletico would be "very dangerous", having watched them push Real Madrid all the way in a 3-2 derby defeat at the weekend.

"They gave Real a hard time at their own ground," he added.

Also counting against Valencia is a lengthy injury list.

David Villa could return to the squad, but it seems unlikely he would be thrown into action for this match with so many pressing league matches to come in the next few weeks.

Miguel, Jeremy Mathieu and David Albelda are injured, Alejandro Dominguez is ineligible and Ever Banega is suspended.

David Navarro and Carlos Marchena are both rated as doubtful.

Atletico's form has improved of late, but their league position is beyond rescue and their only hope of playing in the Europa League again is to win either the competition itself or the Copa del Rey, in which they will face Sevilla in the final.

That makes this match all the more important to Quique Sanchez Flores' team.

"We must stay focused for the entire ninety minutes and make sure we don't concede any goals" young Argentinian forward Eduardo Salvio told Marca, who is pushing his own claims to make a rare appearance.

"I keep working in search of playing time and to do what I can for the team."

Forward Jose Antonio Reyes is out, along with Juan Valera, while Tiago and Ibrahima Balde are ineligible.
