Marseille beat fierce southern rival Nice 1-0 on Sunday to stay in touch with French league leader Paris Saint-Germain.

Andre-Pierre Gignac scored the only goal of the game in the 14th minute, heading in Mathieu Valbuena's corner for his 10th league goal of the season.

Nice upped the pressure in the second half, and Didier Digard's free kick was deflected just past the right upright 15 minutes from time.

Marseille moved provisionally above Lyon into second place, seven points behind PSG, which beat Montpellier 1-0 on Friday.
