Marseille fails to capitalize at home
Marseille fell three points off the pace in the race for a Champions League berth next season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Valenciennes at Stade Velodrome.
Alou Diarra opened the scoring for the hosts just after the quarter-hour but Gil secured a share of the spoils for the visitors with the equaliser in the 50th minute.
Renaud Cohade created the first chance of the match inside the opening 60 seconds when he fired into the side-netting, while minutes later Marseille threatened when Rod Fanni crossed for Jordan Ayew but his header went straight at Nicolas Penneteau.
The opening goal arrived in the 16th minute when Mathieu Valbuena sent over a cross from the right and the unmarked Diarra was on hand to beat Penneteau with a close-range header.
Just before the half-hour it was nearly 2-0 when Ayew crashed in a long-range effort that beat Penneteau but came back off the crossbar.
Ayew's misfortune looked all the more costly when VA levelled just five minutes after the restart.
The goal came from a set-piece as Gael Danic fired over a corner that was only half cleared, and when the ball came to Gil the Brazilian had a simple task to fire home from close range.
Penneteau denied Morgan Amalfitano as the hosts sought to re-establish their lead, but the next goal might easily have gone the way of Valenciennes, Danic with a well-struck volley that Steve Mandanda diverted for a corner.
With 73 minutes gone Marseille's Jeremy Morel hit the side-netting with a long-range shot, and Marseille saw their last chance of claiming all the points slip away two minutes from full-time when Brandao's header smashed against a post.
