Maicon guarantees he will stay at Inter Milan
Brazil right back Maicon dismissed reports that he is moving to Real Madrid and said Friday he is happy to remain at Inter Milan until his contract expires in 2014.
Maicon told Inter Milan fans that he will not leave the Italian club unless president Massimo Moratti decides to sell him.
``I'm very happy at my club and the fans can rest assured that I will not leave unless the president wants me to leave,'' Maicon said.
The defender acknowledged, however, that the only club he would play for other than Inter is Real Madrid. Rumors of a possible transfer increased recently after Maicon praised the Spanish club in comments that he downplayed on Saturday.
``I didn't say I want to go to Real Madrid,'' Maicon said. ``I said that if there would be another club I would like to go now, after winning these important titles with Inter, it would be Real Madrid, no other club.''
Maicon helped the Italian club win the Champions League, the Italian league and the Italian Cup this year.
He had said Real Madrid would be his choice because it's a club with a similar structure to Inter's. He also said it would be nice to rejoin Jose Mourinho, the former Inter coach who has moved to Real Madrid.
``Not a lot would change if I had to play for Real Madrid,'' the 28-year-old Maicon said.
Maicon is in South Africa where Brazil is hoping to win its sixth World Cup title. It will be his first World Cup, but he helped Brazil win the 2004 and 2007 Copa America titles and the 2005 and 2009 Confederations Cups.
Maicon is part of what is considered by many commentators to be the strongest aspect of the current Brazil national team - the defense. Maicon's substitute is Barcelona's Daniel Alves.
``It's good to know that there is someone like him waiting for an opportunity,'' Maicon said. ``It makes me want to try to give my best to keep playing.''
Maicon has established himself as a fitting replacement for Cafu, who dominated the right back position from 1994-2006 and holds the record for number of international appearances for Brazil at 150.
``Everybody used to say that there were no substitutes to Cafu,'' Maicon said. ``But today we are glad to hear that the right back position in the national team is praised.''
A member of Brazil's youth teams, Maicon moved to European football from Brazilian club Cruzeiro in 2004, signing with Monaco before transferring to Inter Milan in 2006.
