Lions snub 'spurred' Jarvis on
The Wolves winger has been included in the squad for Saturday's Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales and next Tuesday's friendly international with Ghana. Jarvis had been named in two provisional squads earlier this season but his outstanding form in recent weeks has led to making him the step up. It is a sharp contrast to being released the Lions at the age of 16. But Jarvis believes that setback gave him the mental strength needed to reach his current heights in the game. He rebuilt his career at Gillingham and has gradually improved under Mick McCarthy at Wolves during the past three seasons. Jarvis said: "This is a stark contrast to the emotions I felt when released by Millwall at 16. "That is something I look back and think 'that was maybe a time that spurred me on'. "It is hard to hear that when you are 16, getting released, but you've just got to be mentally strong. "You've got to have the right people around you to guide you in the right direction and actually work hard. I'm also willing to listen and learn. "I went to Gillingham, got signed up there and have never looked back since. "It is everyone's dream to play for their country and now I'm in the squad and am delighted." Jarvis acknowledges the support he has received from parents Nick and Linda who were number one table tennis players for England. He said: "They've been fantastic to me ever since I was young. Everywhere I needed to go for training, they always took me there. "Over the last few years they've been able to give me a bit of advice here and there on different parts of the mental side of the game. "They've been able to guide me in different situations, "Mind you the lads here are now a bit wary of me as a table tennis player! "I played a bit. I was a little bit rusty to start with and then I managed to beat a few. "Then I dropped it in (that my mother and father played the game) and they couldn't believe it. "They thought they were getting hustled. I played against Michael Dawson and Joe Hart. The word is out now so I will have to improve my game!" In a more serious vein, Jarvis is quick to recognise the help he has received from his former Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler and current Wolves manager, Mick McCarthy. Jarvis said: "Mick has been a massive influence. He took me to Wolves and I've been working every day with him and his staff. "He has been telling me different things he thinks I should improve on and he has given me confidence to go out and do it. "Hopefully that help he has given me has been repaid with this call-up. "But I'll also never forget the part played by Andy when I first went to Gillingham. "He was a massive influence, giving me my first contract and first start." Jarvis is the first Wolves player to be called up by England since Steve Bull and his form has been on a gradual upward curve. He scored his fifth goal of the campaign to earn Wolves a vital 1-0 win over Aston Villa at the weekend in their battle to stay in the Premier League. He said: "It shows you can get in the squad if you are in any team in the Premier League. "I suppose everything has been coming together at the right time. I've been working hard on different parts of my game. "I wanted to improve my goals tally. Hopefully I'm starting to do well and we've been playing well. "It's helped that everyone else in the team has been doing well and it's helped me out."
