Latvia beats Moldova 3-2 in World Cup qualifier
Andrejs Rubins scored two goals in the first half Wednesday to help give Latvia a 3-2 victory over Moldova in their final World Cup qualifier. Neither team had a realistic chance of reaching next year's tournament. Latvia finished with 17 points in Group 2, while Moldova was last with three points. Gheorghi Ovseannicov gave Moldova the lead in the 25th with a volley into the top corner of the net. But Latvia took over after Serghei Lascencov was red-carded in the 32nd minute for using his hand to block a pass near the area. Rubins capitalized on the subsequent free kick, after is low, hard shot was deflected by a Moldovan defender past goalkeeper Stanislav Namasco. Rubins then found himself alone in front of the Moldovan goal in the 44th to convert a quick pass from striker Maris Verpakovskis.
