Feyenoord says coach Ronald Koeman has agreed to a one-year contract extension at the resurgent Rotterdam club.

Financial details of the former Netherlands defender's contract were not revealed, but technical director Martin van Geel said on Tuesday the new contract was ''a significant upgrade'' for Koeman.

Feyenoord has struggled for several seasons to keep pace with traditional powerhouses Ajax and PSV, however Koeman has led a young team to fifth in the Eredivisie midway through his first season in charge.

Koeman has previously coached Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch league as well as spells in charge of Valencia and Benfica.
