Jol focus back on league affairs
The Amsterdammers head into Sunday's match at De Graafschap second in the Eredivisie standings having picked up seven points from their first three games and further boosted by reaching the Champions League group phase for the first time in five years on Wednesday night. Ajax advanced with a 2-1 win in the second leg of their play-off against Dynamo Kiev, which secured a 3-2 aggregate victory over the Ukrainian outfit. Luis Suarez put the Dutch team ahead in the 43rd minute and a second from Mounir El Hamdaoui after 75 minutes appeared to put the tie safe. Andriy Shevchenko's 84th-minute penalty caused a few anxious moments but Ajax clung on - much to Jol's delight. "On my arrival at Ajax last year we had a few goals - score many goals, concede few goals and reach the Champions League," he said. "We have now achieved them all - and with a young squad. "Actually, we now have to a party. This means a lot. Also for Dutch football - it is good that we have managed this." PSV Eindhoven, the Eredivisie leaders and the only team with a 100% record from their first three matches, are also in action on Sunday - at ADO Den Haag - following tonight's crucial Europa League play-off second leg against Sibir Novosibirsk at the Philips Stadion. Third-placed FC Utrecht and 2009 champions AZ Alkmaar are also in Europa League action tonight, before resuming league action on Sunday with a trip to champions FC Twente and a home clash with Excelsior respectively. Former Holland Under-21 playmaker Ismail Aissati cannot wait to get started on his new project after joining Vitesse Arnhem on a season-long loan from Ajax earlier this week. "I'm looking forward to the first game, against Feyenoord on Sunday," the 22-year-old told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. "At Ajax I felt like I was heading into a dead end. For this reason I was glad to leave." The weekend's action kicks off tomorrow night when basement boys Willem II look to pick up their first point of the season against FC Groningen. Fourth-placed NEC Nijmegen can steal a march on their rivals by taking advantage of playing a day earlier than the top three. A home win over Heerenveen would move them level on points with leaders PSV. Elsewhere on Saturday, NAC Breda, who like Willem II have also lost all three games so far, take on VVV Venlo while Roda JC host Heracles Almelo.
