Ireland goes top with easy win against Andorra
Ireland climbed to the top of Group B on Tuesday by easing past Andorra 3-1 to clinch a second European Championship qualifying win in five days.
Kevin Kilbane and Kevin Doyle put the Irish two goals ahead by the 41st minute but Christian Martinez gave Andorra hope by pulling one back with a half-volley on the stroke of half time.
Captain Robbie Keane settled any Ireland nerves with the hosts' third, clipping home a neat finish nine minutes after the break.
Giovanni Trapattoni's side moved to six points, having beaten Armenia 1-0 on Friday in its first qualifier. It was Andorra's second successive defeat in qualifying after losing to Russia.
''We'd have liked maybe to get a couple more, but we'll take that,'' Doyle said. ''We're sitting pretty after two games.''
Kilbane's first international goal in 3 1/2 years came 14 minutes into a first half the Irish dominated. The left back rose high to head a left-wing corner from Liam Lawrence into the corner.
Lawrence shot into the side-netting on the half-hour mark but was instrumental in Doyle's goal four minutes before the break. The pair combined well before the Wolverhampton striker cut inside and smashed a powerful left-foot strike into the top corner.
''I struck it pretty well. When they fly in like that, they look pretty good,'' Doyle said.
Andorra, ranked No. 201 and very much the group underdogs, reduced the deficit with one of its rare attacks, Christian Martinez connecting well with a half-volley that flew past goalkeeper Shay Given.
Keane made the game safe for the hosts when he ran onto a through ball and chipped his finish over advancing goalkeeper Jose Antonio Gomes.
