Ipswich v Charlton reaction

Under-pressure Ipswich manager Paul Jewell has no intention to quit despite his side sliding to a 2-1 defeat at home to Charlton.

The Blues have lost four of their seven league games and only won once, a rotten sequence that has put Jewell's job on the line.

Harry Redknapp is already being touted as a possible successor; the former Spurs boss is close friends with Ipswich owner Marcus Evans.

"I'm annoyed and I know I'm not very popular at the minute," Jewell said. "But I'm not going to run and hide.

"It's not nice and it's a horrendous place to be (second from bottom). But all I can do, and all I will do, is keep doing my job to the best of my ability; until I'm told otherwise.

"I'm not going to quit. It's not an easy situation but I'm not going to chuck it in."

When asked about the Redknapp rumours, Jewell added: "I don't know if I'll keep my job. You're asking the wrong man.

"If Harry Redknapp is going to become manager of Ipswich then that will happen. What can I do about it?

"If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge he can do it. He can do what he likes.

"The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can to try and get it right. Until I'm told differently I won't run away.

"You've got to face up to challenges in life and this is certainly a challenge for me and my family. But I'll dust myself down, come in tomorrow and prepare for the Barnsley game."

Charlton scored both their goals at the start of the second half.

The first came after a ball in from the right reached Salim Kerkar, whose low cross from the left was turned in by skipper Johnnie Jackson.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 as Massimo Luongo was robbed of possession and Ricardo Fuller, on his full debut, surged forward and skipped round Tommy Smith before firing into the bottom corner.

Town pulled one back in fortuitous circumstances when Jason Scotland's speculative effort deflected in off Leon Cort.

But Charlton hung on and delighted boss Chris Powell said: "It's been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich.

"We both saw it as an opportunity to get back on track and I'm delighted we came out on top. Over 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance from all my players.

"We'd lost our previous three games but gone close, although I know I can't keep saying that. You've got to get points.

"The last half-hour against Derby (on Tuesday night) showed what we can do in this league. I asked my players to show what they could do for longer than 30 minutes and I felt they did that today.

"I'm really pleased for everyone connected within our club."
