Hughes a clever boy for County
Hughes slotted home in the 35th minute and again in second-half injury time to seal the win, but the Blue Square Bet South side certainly had their chances in an entertaining encounter, most notably Leroy Griffiths whose tame penalty in first-half stoppage time was saved by Stuart Nelson. Paul Doswell's men started the brighter of the two sides as Griffiths and Harry Beautyman both forced Nelson into sprawling saves early on. But the League One side grew into the game as the half wore on and had already seen Alan Judge come close twice when Hughes gave them the lead in the 35th minute, cleverly diverting Karl Hawley's low strike past Kevin Scriven in the Us goal. Ben Burgess then wasted a golden opportunity to put County two goals ahead, and he should have been made to pay in first-half injury time but Griffiths' penalty, after Craig Watkins was fouled, was too close to Nelson. The home side pressed hard in the second period but lacked the quality to unlock the away team and had already seen second-half replacement Karl Murray given his marching orders when Hughes fired in his second of the game.
