Hamburg fires Veh after Bayern thrashing
Hamburger SV fired coach Armin Veh Sunday after the team was thrashed 6-0 at Bayern Munich.
The club said that Veh was leaving with immediate effect. Assistant coach Michael Oenning will be in charge for the rest of the season.
Only last week, Veh had said he would leave at the end of the season - one year before his contract was due to expire. He said he was going because of the ''unsettled'' situation at Hamburg.
Veh had hinted several times that he was tired of coaching.
Before Saturday's defeat in Munich, Hamburg lost 4-2 at home to Mainz, and currently lies eighth in the Bundesliga standings, six points off European qualification.
''After announcing that he was going to leave at the end of the season and reflecting on our last two results, we decided to make a move and relieve Armin Veh of his duties,'' Hamburg sporting director Bastian Reinhardt said on the club's website.
Assistant coach Reiner Geyer has also been fired.
Oenning, a former coach at Nuremberg, could remain in charge next season.
''There are still eight games before the season ends. We don't want to give anything away,'' said Reinhardt.
Veh is the eighth coach to leave Hamburg early under chief executive Bernd Hoffmann, who is stepping down at the end of the season following a vote of no confidence after eight years in charge.
Veh took over at Hamburg last May. The 50-year-old won the Bundesliga title with Stuttgart in 2007, but was fired the following year after a string or poor results.
He also took over then Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg in July 2009, but was fired the following January.
