Guthrie enjoying new Toon role

The 24-year-old made his first Premier League start for six months in the recent win over Stoke after the influential Cheick Tiote was ruled out with a knee injury. Guthrie impressed alongside Yohan Cabaye in the heart of Newcastle's midfield and also capably deputised for the Ivorian again in Saturday's 2-1 win over Everton at St James' Park. But he said: "It wasn't easy coming in to replace Cheick because we're totally different players. "We knew I was not going to be a direct replacement for him, but I had to adapt my game a little bit. "Playing with Yohan, who plays a bit more forward than Cheick, I've had to sit a bit deeper than I'm used to." Pardew, meanwhile, has paid tribute to the defenders who have laid the foundation for the club's fine start to the season. The Magpies headed into the international break sitting proudly in third place in the Premier League table after an 11-game undefeated opening to the campaign which has seen them concede just eight goals. That is the best record in the division with even leaders Manchester City having shipped one more, and in a season which has already seen some spectacular exploits in front of goal, Pardew believes his back four and keeper deserve all the plaudits they are receiving. He said: "There have been a lot of goals in the Premier League. "There are some fantastic players and sometimes, as much as you can defend and have all your disciplines in place, someone can produce a bit of quality to unlock it. "Fortunately for us, for whatever reason, that hasn't happened too often, and long may that continue."
