Gunners fail in Jagielka bid - Report

Arsenal are reportedly lining up a £16million bid for Everton defender Phil Jagielka after seeing an initial offer knocked back by the Toffees.

Arsene Wenger has gone on record to state he wants to sign another defender following the capture of Laurent Koscielny and the Frenchman has long been credited with an interest in Jagielka.

The 27-year-old made an impressive return from a knee ligament injury last season and Wenger apparently sees him as the experienced player he needs to shore up his backline.

However, Everton are determined to keep hold of all their players this summer and the Daily Mirror claims the Merseyside outfit have already rejected a £14million offer from Arsenal for Jagielka.

The paper claims the Gunners will return with an improved offer to test the Toffees' resolve, though, and a club-record bid of £16million could be enough to tempt David Moyes into selling the former Sheffield United star.

Meanwhile the Daily Star, which also reports Wenger's interest in Jagielka, claims Sol Campbell will be offered another 12-month contract to remain at Emirates Stadium.
