Gunn: Canaries looking good
Norwich finished 12th last season under the guidance of Paul Lambert, who departed for Aston Villa in the summer. But Gunn sees no reason why City cannot have another good season under new manager Chris Hughton.
Gunn told Sky Sports News Radio: "I think there is optimism at Carrow Road. The introduction of Chris Hughton and his staff, plus the couple of signings they have made, and extending the contracts of John Ruddy and Grant Holt, I think Norwich fans will be quite happy at the moment.
"Hughton has a strong squad there and has the likes of James Vaughan coming back from injury, plus he still has a couple of weeks to deal in the transfer market should he need to."
On the issue of City suffering from possible second season syndrome, Gunn added: "Hughton has worked in the Premier League before as an assistant manager and he guided Newcastle back into the Premier League as well. This is a new opportunity for Chris as well. Reading between the lines from comments in the press, the players are enjoying the training and the new set-up, so it is down to them to get off to a good start and get some points on the board as quickly as possible because they don't want to be lagging behind. The fixture list has been quite good to Norwich in the first six games so it's a good opportunity for Chris and the players to get some points early on."
Gunn continued: "I would have thought City's first aim will be to stay in the league. Last season was a tremendous effort from everybody. If they can make a good start and gain the confidence they finished last season with, there's no reason why they can't go on and emulate what they did last season. Whether they can do that is now down to the players and the staff."
Striker Grant Holt is staying on at the club, and Gunn said: "I think there was some misunderstanding about the situation. I think Grant was holding out for a better deal, and wanting parity with the new players who signed with the club in the Premier League season. He had been the top scorer and almost got in the England squad and he's a big hero with the City fans."
