Guatemala's soccer federation says investigators from FIFA were in the country looking into a match-fixing scandal involving four games, with three players implicated and suspended from the national team.
Bryan Jimenez, president of the Guatemalan federation, confirmed Friday the three players involved are Gustavo Cabrera, Yoni Flores and Guillermo Ramirez. They were suspended from the national team this week for what coach Ever Hugo Alemeida called acts of indiscipline.
Jimenez said one of the four matches was played just a week ago, Guatemala's 3-2 exhibition loss to Costa Rica. Also involved were exhibitions between Guatemala and South Africa, and Guatemala and Venezuela. The fourth was a 6-1 win by Mexico's Santos Laguna over Guatemala's Municipal in the CONCACAF Champions League in October 2010.
In the semifinal round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, Guatemala is at Jamaica on June 8 and hosts the United States on June 12.
