Former Aston Villa manager John Gregory has quit as coach of Ashdod, 11 months after being appointed to lead the Israeli team.

Ashdod is fourth last in the Israeli league after losing 4-1 at lowly Hapoel Ashkelon on Sunday. There are five rounds left in the season.

The 56-year-old Englishman said Monday he made his decision after consulting with assistant coach Itzik Ovadia.

Gregory says it has ''been a very difficult nine months'' but ''nobody comes before the club.''

He says speculation a new coach was set to come in had made him ''think about it because if we're not going to be here next year we might as well go now.''

Gregory moved to Israel in December 2009 to take over as coach of Ahi Nazareth.
