The future of Greece coach Otto Rehhagel is in doubt after the country was eliminated from the World Cup.

The German, who turns 72 in August, is widely expected to step down after assistant coach Yiannis Topalidis announced his resignation late Tuesday.

State-run media in Greece reported that Rehhagel has already announced his decision to quit to Greek players, but team officials could not be reached for comment.

Greece was eliminated Tuesday after a 2-0 loss to Argentina in the final Group B match. South Korea joined Argentina in the round of 16 after holding Nigeria to a 2-2 draw.

Rehhagel was appointed Greece coach in 2001 and stunned the football world when his team won the European Championship three years later.
