Greece: 3rd topflight club faces relegation

BY foxsports • September 30, 2011

Organizers of the Greek football league say southern club Asteras will be relegated to the second division and fined ?300,000 ($410,000), after examining evidence gathered in a match-fixing probe that has already seen two other clubs demoted.

Greece's Superleague said Friday that Asteras, based in the town of Tripoli, will be relegated pending an appeal by the club.

Club chairman Giorgos Borovilos, denied claims of attempted bribery, calling the decision ''totally irrational.''

No date has been set for the appeal.

The 16-team league has yet to fill two missing places, after topflight clubs Kavala and Volos were thrown out of professional competition this summer over the match-fixing scandal.
