Gomez patience pays off
The Spaniard put Wigan on their way to three points on Saturday when he opened the scoring in a 2-0 victory. His outing against Wolves was just reward for a couple of impressive outings in the Carling Cup, which helped him to catch Roberto Martinez's eye. Gomez admits there were times when he was left frustrated by his continued omission from the side, but feels his performance at the weekend has justified the faith he has always maintained in his own ability. "I haven't been playing as much as I'd have liked, but I have been working so hard on the training ground to persuade the gaffer I deserve to play," he told the Wigan Evening Post. "It seems to have worked off and I need to make the most of it. "Being in the first XI means everything, and I aim to stay there now." The encounter with Wolves certainly proved to be an eventful one for Gomez, as he was also at the centre of another major talking point to emerge from he game. It was he who was scythed down by Karl Henry in a challenge which earned the visiting skipper a red card. Gomez can consider himself fortunate not to have picked up a serious injury from the mis-timed tackle, but he has refused to condemn Henry for his actions. "I saw the player coming and I managed to touch the ball and jump," he smiled. "Maybe if I hadn't jumped it would have been a lot worse, so I'm really glad I did."
