Goias takes 2-0 lead over Independiente
Rafael Moura and Neto scored first-half goals, leading modest Brazil club Goias to a 2-0 victory over Argentina's Independiente on Wednesday in the first-leg of the Copa Sudamericana final.
Moura scored in the 16th, chipping in a loose ball near the goal mouth, and Neto added his in the 21st, firing into an empty net for the recently relegated Brazilian club.
The Copa Sudamericana is South America's No. 2 club competition behind the better-known Copa Libertadores. The winner gets a berth in the Copa Libertadores.
The return leg is next week in Argentina.
Independiente played with 10 men after Andres Silvera was sent off in the 57th.
The wet pitch at Goias' stadium seemed to bother the Argentines more than the Brazilians, who looked comfortable on the surface.
The first-leg result was something of a shock for Independiente. Goias has just been relegated to the second division of Brazil football and has never won a major international trophy.
Independiente, though it is having a poor season in the Argentina Apertura tournament, is known as the "Rey de Copas" (King of Cups) and has won the Copa Libertadores seven times, the most by any club in Latin America. It also has two world club titles and 14 Argentine league trophies.
Independiente eliminated defending Copa Sudamericana champion Liga de Quito of Ecuador in the semifinals, while Goias stunned four-time Brazilian champion and 1999 Copa Libertadores winner Palmeiras, winning the second leg in front of nearly 40,000 Palmeiras fans.
