Wayne Rooney is itching to inspire England at the World Cup, says his temporary Manchester United boss, Ryan Giggs.

The striker's previous two World Cup campaigns have been hampered by injury and a groin problem will see him sit out United's Premier League finale against Southampton on Sunday.

But Giggs is confident Rooney will be fit to fire in Brazil - and has backed him to this time live up to his star billing.

"Wayne is at the peak of his powers," Giggs said of the 28-year-old.

"Wayne is a top player. He is at a good age. I know for a fact he can't wait for it.

"He has had a fantastic season and he is ready to make an impact."

Rooney's impact at Germany 2006 was hindered by a broken metatarsal and four years later he suffered an ankle injury shortly before the showpiece tournament in South Africa.

But Giggs shrugged off his latest complaint, and is also confident that Phil Jones will be named in Roy Hodgson's 23 on Monday despite a shoulder injury.

"Wayne will be fine for the World Cup," Giggs added. "It was just a little groin strain. He is fine. He has done all the work in the gym.

"He will be fine. He is going away next week and working on his fitness as well so it has probably helped him. The injury has probably done him a favor."
