Ghana suffer Essien injury blow

The Blues star was taken to a Luanda hospital on Sunday to undergo tests after sustaining a knock to his knee in training. It was hoped he would make a swift recovery but Ghana have now learnt he will not be fit for their final African Cup of Nations group match. "We don't know the extent of the injury, but he won't be available for the next game. It's official," said Ghana spokesman Randy Abbey. Ghana were beaten 3-1 by Ivory Coast in their opening Group B clash, while Burkina Faso held the Elephants to a goalless draw. Ghana therefore need to beat Burkina Faso to finish second as the fourth team in the group, Togo, pulled out of the tournament following the deadly gun attack on their team bus. If Ghana manage to progress to the last eight they will play their quarter-final on Sunday against the winners of Group A and they will hope to have Essien available. Essien had only returned from more than a month out due to a hamstring injury against Ivory Coast, coming on as a half-time substitute.
