Gervinho shines as Reds lose
Gervinho lifted home a shot from Jack Wilshere's perceptive pass to put Arsenal ahead early on before turning home Theo Walcott's cross after 15 minutes to double their advantage. He was replaced on the half-hour mark following a collision with Cologne keeper Michael Rensing, but his debut appearance will have pleased Arsene Wenger. However, the match will be remembered for a bizarre own goal scored by Carl Jenkinson on the stroke of half-time. The full-back swung his right foot at a high ball attempting a clearance, but got it horribly wrong and contrived to lob Wojciech Szczesny in the Arsenal goal from some 20 yards. Liverpool, meanwhile, handed debuts to Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Alexander Doni in their defeat to Hull. Goals from Robert Brady, Robert Koren and Jay Simpson gave the Tigers a friendly victory they will remember on a day when Kenny Dalglish fielded 22 players in a bid to get his hefty squad fit for the 2011-12 campaign. Elsewhere Tottenham clinched the Vodacom Challenge title with a 3-0 victory over Orlando Pirates in Johannesburg thanks to a Rafael van der Vaart double and Jermain Defoe strike Sunderland rounded off their German tour with a goalless draw against Borussia Monchengladbach in which Titus Bramble was sent off following a a second yellow card 19 minutes from time. Connor Wickham and Ji Dong-Won started up front for Sunderland but the visitors spent the latter stages of the second half defending bravely. Jonathan Woodgate made his Stoke debut in their friendly at Aldershot but the Potters suffered their second 1-0 defeat in 24 hours courtesy of Adam Mekki's late goal. Thomas Sorensen also made his first appearance of the summer for Stoke in their final pre-season friendly before Thursday's Europa League qualifier against Hajduk Split. Wolves were denied a win at Notts County by Neal Bishop's last-minute goal. Matt Jarvis had given Wanderers the lead with a calm finish shortly before the half-hour mark before Bishop converted from close range with seconds to spare.
