Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will miss the first leg of the club's Europa League last-16 tie away to Braga on Thursday night.

Gerrard has not been included in a 24-man squad which travelled to northern Portugal on Wednesday.

The England midfielder has recently returned from a groin injury and appeared to be playing within himself during Sunday's 3-1 win over Manchester United.

The 30-year-old's participation in the victory over United had been in doubt prior to kick-off amid reports Gerrard had picked up a knock in training.

Ahead of the game against Braga, Reds boss Kenny Dalglish has opted against taking any further risks with his skipper's fitness.

Record signing Andy Carroll is in the squad and the striker is in line to make his European bow after making his Liverpool debut as a substitute against United.

Fellow January arrival Luis Suarez has also travelled with the party, although he is ineligible after featuring for Ajax earlier in the competition.

Martin Kelly and Jonjo Shelvey have also flown out to Portugal, despite the young duo currently being unavailable for selection due to injury.
