Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne was told by a court on Wednesday he could face a 12-week jail sentence after admitting to drink-driving.

The 43-year-old Gascoigne pleaded guilty at a hearing at Newcastle Magistrates' Court to driving on Oct. 8 while more than four times the legal alcohol limit.

District Judge Stephen Erl said all options ''up to and including a custodial sentence'' were open. Erl banned Gascoigne from driving and said the 1990 World Cup star will be sentenced on Nov. 11.

Gascoigne - nicknamed ''Gazza'' - has been plagued by alcohol and mental-health problems since quitting the game in 2005. The former Newcastle, Tottenham and Lazio player was twice detained for mental health problems in 2008 and was left in a serious condition after a car accident in June.
