Garrido looks on bright side
New Villarreal coach Juan Carlos Garrido found plenty of positives
from his side's performance against Real Mallorca despite seeing
them go down to a late goal.
In what was Garrido's debut in the hot-seat, Villarreal
created the better chances and if striker Joseba Llorente had made
the most of his three decent openings then the Yellow Submarine
could have become the first away team to win at the Ono Estadi in
La Liga this season.
However, Mallorca survived and made it 10 wins out of 10 at
home thanks to Jose Carlos Nunes' 81st-minute header, leaving
Villarreal now 11 points behind the Balearic Island side, who
occupy the final Champions League spot.
Garrido, who was promoted from Villarreal's B team to replace
the sacked Ernesto Valverde last week, admits he was disappointed
with the loss but felt the team had taken a "step forward".
"In matches, the first thing you look at is the result and
this one was negative. For that we are a little disappointed, we've
given it our best and I think we deserved much more," he said.
"I also think we've tried to improve, we've taken a step
forward.
"The team looked confident in possession and I think we had
four or five clear chances, but we didn't take advantage of them
and maybe it's these chances where we deserved more, because the
performance was very good."
He added: "For a lot of the match we deserved to achieve more
and all the players contributed, but the lack of confidence cost in
the chances we've had.
"After we recover confidence I think results will come."
